(FT5) Panasonic GH3 with new 16 Megapixel “Wide Dynamic Range” sensor. 12.800 ISO and 72mbit/s in video.

According to two of our best sources the new Panasonic GH3 has a new 16 megapixel sensor. It is not the same of the Panasonic G5! Panasonic defined this as a “Wide Dynamic Range” sensor. As we know from past we have to see soem real test before to know if that is just a “marketing slogan” or a real major improvement. One source said firmware is not final but the dynamic range increase looks like to be more in the shadows than in the highlights. ISO goes up to 12.800.
Both sources said this is the definitely best hybrid stills&video camera they have ever seen. And they were so kind to give me the detailed bitrate: The GH3 can do “All-I 72 Mbps“.

According to 43rumors, this might be true. Keep in mind that they only rated this as FT2 and based on the past experience, their FT2s don’t always turn into reality. It does make sense that Panasonic should be thinking about the weather sealed version of their existing lenses since the GH3 will be the first weather sealed body produced by Panasonic. But given that the GH3 is targeted to more professional crowd, I’m not sure if 14-140mm is the best choice here – its a versatile lens but 14-140mm is not known for its ultimate image quality. For those crowds, they should be looking at 12-35mm and upcoming 35-100mm.
Oh yes, and they are expecting this kit will be priced at 1700 Euro, which sounds reasonable.

The weather sealed 12-35mm is Panasonic’s new top of the range Lumix zoom with a constant F2.8 aperture. It’s also the lens most likely to be offered with the (also expected to be weather sealed) GH3. Panasonic have taken a huge step with build quality on this lens and I’m expecting the GH3 to be a big improvement in this area as well.
DSLR Magazine have taken a look at the new lens, and here’s my view on it.
Lumix lenses – the good stuff
One thing that Panasonic’s lenses have got going for them, is their optical quality and level of new technology on display. They have innovated ahead of Canon and Nikon with a list of features as long as your arm – silently operating optical image stabilisation, focus and the iris, AF in video mode, internally focussing elements, a continuously variable iris (again for video) and even a couple of power zooms. Distortion and fringing are corrected in firmware with Lumix lenses, again an innovative approach in integrating the optics and body. Optically a lot of the lenses are tack sharp even wide open especially the 20mm F1.7 pancake and nice but pricey 7-14mm F4 ultra wide (which is optically one of the best wide angle lenses on any system).
