Well, we've been kept waiting and waiting but Leica has at last revealed its APS-C-format, fixed zoom compact camera. It's called the Leica X Vario, officially, but dubbed the 'Mini M'. You can read our first look here and see the product shots here. Don't just accept what we say about it, regardless of how well-respected our opinions are, when you've read all about the new camera why not tell us what you think? So what else has been going on? In product news Adobe has just released Lightroom 5, and you can read our expert contributor Martin Evening's thoughts on the Beta version in AP 29 June. Meanwhile, another long-awaited camera - Hasselblad's own APS-C compact, the Lunar - has been released in the UK. Pentax has gone against the recent flow of things releasing the Efina - a budget, entry level compact camera - at a time when other companies are ending, or slashing, the production of such models in the face of competition from smartphones. Elsewhere, Canon is to next month release an EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lens for its EOS M CSC. There will also be a firmware update. The biggest and most troubling news, however, is that of the potential closure of the National Medium Museum (NMM) in Bradford if government funding is cut further. It's an incredibly important resource for photography and a petition has been launched to save it. You can see that here. Also online this week, we have a range of round-ups of second-hand kit, including ones for twin-lens reflex cameras, film cameras for under £30, DSLR bargains. We also offer advice on buying a second hand DSLR.
For the tech-savvy among you, we take a look at smartphone apps that try to mimic the 'retro' look of vintage cameras, in our article Vintage cameras or smartphone apps. If you're looking to set up a studio, we have also compared the best studio flash kits for under £500. We're running a fun competition to win one of three Dodge and Burn photography T-Shirts that we're all quite taken with around the AP office. For a chance to win one, just guess which camera we've partially hidden underneath a Dodge and Burn t-shirt. See our competition page for to see the image and for details on how to enter.
